When you hear about a creative writer, what comes to mind? I assure you, they are not just mere writers. As someone who has worked with many creative writers, I will tell you firsthand that they are not just writers; they bring creativity into writing. Think about your favorite novel, poem, or even a storybook that your child adores so much. What was your favorite thing about it? The storyline? The word flow? The memorable characters? That is creative writing taking its course; that is creative writing trying to get to your imagination and get you hooked up. The most popular way of advertising today in Nigeria is storytelling and I must say it’s very effective.

So creative writing is not just writing; you need to bring creativity into it. I will talk about who creative writers are, how to become one, and the tips to become a successful creative writer.

Key Points

  • Creative writing entails captivating audiences through story writing and literary works.
  • Imagination, creativity, fluency, storytelling, and persuasion are essential skills for a successful writer, enabling them to craft compelling narratives and engage readers effectively.
  • Practical tips such as capturing readers’ attention, free writing, extensive reading, learning from professionals, and understanding the target audience are crucial for aspiring creative writers to develop and improve their craft.

Who Are Creative Writers?

Creative writers are writers who captivate and entertain audiences by crafting material that tells a story, shares information, and inspires audiences. They write in a way that displays imagination and invention. They use more storytelling, poems, and other literary work to keep readers engaged in the article. Also, they aim to evoke emotion in a reader by communicating a theme.

Creative writers are not just book writers; creative writers also work in the entertainment industry and even the television industry. There are a lot of jobs out there for creative writers, including freelance creative writers. Unlike other types of writers who may focus on authentic or real information, creative writers are free to explore the depths of their imaginations and bring their visions to life on the page. They have a unique ability to take an idea, or a feeling and turn it into a captivating story that will affect the reader emotionally. They understand the power of language and use their skills to summon emotions and engage readers.

A Creative writer may be naturally gifted or can develop the skills by taking online classes, gaining work experience, completing freelance projects, or reading and writing during your free time. A creative writer can write in several genre categories, including

  • Literary fiction
  • Action and adventure
  • Horror
  • Romance
  • Science fiction
  • fantasy

Types of Creative Writers

There are different types of creative writers who hone their crafts in various genres and mediums. Creative writers can specialise in multiple areas, shaping their careers to fit their interests and talents. There are different types of creative writers and they include

#1. Poets

Poets are creative writers who draw with words, using language to control emotions and thoughts and capture moments in a concise and rhythmic way. They are masters of language, rhythm, and imagination. They are not like prose writers, so they choose their words carefully, each word having its own meaning, sound, and impact.

#2. Novelists

Novelists are creative writers who write fiction stories, usually in the form of a novel. They deeply understand character development, plot development, and theme exploration. They work primarily in long-term fiction, dedicating months or even years to crafting a single manuscript.

#3. Screenwriter and Playwright

They are creative writers who specialise in writing scripts for stage, films, or television shows. They are professionals at crafting dialogue, characters, engaging scenes, and stage directions. Also. they collaborate closely with directors, producers, and other creatives to bring their stories to life on screen or stage. There is a slight difference between a playwright and a screenwriter. Unlike a screenwriter, a playwright writes with the live audience in mind; they deal more with dramas and the arts on stage.

#4. Children’s Book Writer

They write stories specifically for young readers. They use more illustrations, pictures, and age-appropriate language to capture the imaginations of the children, and the same is very educational. Their role is vital in fostering a love of reading and learning in the children while also appealing to the adults who often read along with them.

How to Become a Creative Writer

You don’t need to follow a course of study or have a certificate to become a creative writer but if you do have any of them, it’s a plus for you. To become a writer, you will have to first be a reader and also be willing to accept corrections that can improve your skills. Here are the steps on how to become a creative writer:

#1. Understand Your Subject

Like I said, you have to be a reader to be a good writer. When I’m given something to write about, I first understand what I’m about to write, get books on article-related topics, and read them to become more familiar with the topic. Then I think of how to combine genres to come up with my own story.

Imagine you are writing a romance novel set in Paris. You know the city is known for its beauty and romance, but to create an engaging and interesting story, you need to first learn and understand the culture and lifestyle of Parisians. This could involve reading, travel guides, and their customs and travelling to Praise to witness it firsthand if you can.

#2. Know Your Audience

The next step is to take note of your audience. This requires you to decide the kind of story you are coming up with, whether it’s for children, teens, or adults. Writing style, descriptions, and language depend on knowing who the reader is and what they are expecting at the end. If you are writing a love story with teens as your audience, the love should be surrounded by high school.

Are you targeting readers who love classic, erotic novels, and slow-burning romance, or are they fast-paced modern love stories? As you are writing, remember the age range, especially if your audience is children and teens. For example, you can’t use violent words, sexual content, or complex vocabulary in children’s books.

#3. Set a Schedule

One of the most effective ways to become a successful creative writer is to set aside time for writing. You can decide to go 1000 words daily or 1 hour daily; all that matters is for you to be consistent with what you are doing. Choose an environment conducive enough for you to get your thoughts together and pen something down. Being distracted now and then is not recommended. The goal here is to find a schedule that works for you and stick to it as much as possible.

Setting a schedule is not as easy as it looks, you have to set a time that will help you be accountable to yourself and ensure you have progress on a daily basis. You also have to learn to manage your time. Developing the discipline to write on a schedule can help you overcome moments of self-doubt and procrastination.

#4. Edit and Rewrite

As a writer, you should always be ready to rewrite. You shouldn’t expect to always get it on the first try. You should start with a draft that can be completed without regard for grammar or spelling. Before beginning the editing stage, go through your draft and write down some points and paragraphs that lack directions or are needed to make the story come together. This strategy can help you be more objective when you edit.

At this stage, you can actually read out your written content or you can read it to someone to hear their critiques. You can decide to take a day or two days off from writing to gain some perspective before editing. You can rewrite dialogues between characters, and the introduction, and add more personal and detailed information to keep your readers hooked. Do you feel like some chapters are flat and the interactions lack depth? Rewrite them to suit your taste and that of your audience.

#5. Take an Online Course or Use a Prompt

Taking an online course is optional, but, to be honest, it has a great impact on your writing skills. Most of these online courses don’t offer certificates, its simply taught by selfless individuals who decide to put out what they know to help people who don’t.

A writing prompt is usually a statement focusing on a specific topic or issue and can be followed by clarifying questions. It is what motivates you or makes you want to write. It simply tells you what to write about. Let me give you an example of a prompt for a romance story.

“Write a story where two characters meet for the first time at a coffee shop. One character is a regular at the shop, while the other is there for the first time. They started talking, and they realized they had a lot in common. But while this friendship fosters, does one of them harbor a secret that can keep them apart forever?”

Now that this just gave you a summary of what to write, the questions, depending on how you choose to answer them, will determine how your ending will be. All a prompt does is give you a starting point and a glimpse of how your story might end.

#6. Keep Practicing

Consistency is always the key; you can’t improve your writing skills without being consistent.

The more you write, the more you develop your unique ways and methods. So the most important way to get better at writing is to keep writing.

One thing I believe makes people lose interest in writing easily is setting unachievable goals. Tell me why, as a beginner, your first goal is to write a story of 300,000 words. Although this can work for some people, there are better ways to start when you are not sure of yourself. Start with short stories, the more you write, the more you fall in love with writing and your flow of words. Even when your inspiration is low, keep writing. That’s why it is advisable to join a community that will motivate you. Read widely and study the writing techniques of successful authors, you don’t have to copy them; just take them as inspiration.

#7. Get To Print

Getting published is one of the most important steps in your profession as a creative writer. Look for publications that accept submissions in your genre. Read the guidelines carefully and make sure your work aligns with their requirements. Most publications post writer guidelines that explain what to send, how to send it and what to expect from the publisher.

You can create your work and publish it physically or on a digital platform like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (Amazon KDP). This will help promote and market your work. This concise checklist will help you track down these steps in a more accurate manner:
